Hi

The Harvard system of referencing is used by many people. A good quick guide can be found at- http://education.exeter.ac.uk/dll/studyskills/harvard_referencing.htm

The general rule to go by when referencing a book is - Author, Initials/first name., Year. Title of book. Edition. (only include this if not the first edition) Place: Publisher.

Hope that this is some help!

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me the correct way to reference an author who has been cited in another person's book? I've seen it done lots of different ways and now I'm not sure which is the right one!

Thanks for your help!

Hi Jo,

The best way to do it that I've found is to reference the actual book that you are using as normal (following your reference guidelines), but within the body of the essay, state that "as X is quoted as saying by or in X". That way the reader knows that it isn't the book author who has made the claim.

Does that make sense?
