Nominees for Bad Sex Awards announced by Literary Review

The annual most-dreaded writing prize is awarded to the author who has penned the most toe-curling passage of purple prose in the last year

Books nominated this year include: IQ84, Haruki Murakami; On Canaan’s Side, Sebastian Barry; The Final Testament of the Holy Bible, James Frey; Parallel Stories, Peter Nadas; 11.12.63, Stephen King; Ed King, David Guterson; The Land of Painted Caves, Jean M Auel; The Affair, Lee Child; Dead Europe, Christos Tsiolkas; Outside the Ordinary World, Dori Ostermiller; Everything Beautiful Began After, Simon Van Booy, and The Great Night, Chris Adrian.

‘The purpose of the prize is to draw attention to the crude, tasteless, often perfunctory use of redundant passages of sexual description in the modern novel, and to discourage it,’ said the Literary Review.

The winner will be announced in ‘a lavish ceremony’ on 6 December.
